Engineering & Computer Simulations Designing New Virtual Empathy Soft Skills Training Products
Frontline workers can train using realistic scenarios portraying sensitive challenges.
November 16, 2023: Orlando, FL – Engineering & Computer Simulations (ECS) is developing a new portfolio of Virtual Empathy Soft Skills Training (VESST) that supports the development of a variety of soft skills that frontline personnel must employ during challenging situations involving sensitive subject matter. These immersive and realistic scenarios portray interactions dealing with current social challenges including racism, extremism, discrimination, harassment, and more and could potentially include training regarding sexual assault prevention and suicide awareness prevention.
“ECS is leveraging over 25 years of expertise delivering training for the Department of Defense and government clients and the last six years developing immersive empathy training to create VESST,” explains Waymon Armstrong, ECS founder/CEO. “This innovative, immersive technology is not typically available or used to its full potential when providing county-level frontline workers training, mental health resources, and scenarios such as those in VESST.”
Set in realistic, immersive environments, learners interact with high-fidelity avatars that portray nuanced and evocative responses within engaging lessons and intensive conversations. The avatars deliver immediate reactions to a learner’s choices, showing the consequences of bad decisions, and the benefits of utilizing empathy, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills. VESST provides front-line personnel with a safe space in both clinical and non-clinical settings to navigate the challenges of identifying empathetic interactions, learn from their mistakes, and develop strategies for managing outcomes.
The latest in the VESST product line uses Unreal Engine 5-based MetaHumans technology, combined with motion capture and artificial intelligence enabling rapid development and ultra-high realism. Supported delivery platforms include desktop, mobile, and virtual reality.
A working prototype of VESST and related projects from the product line will be available to see in ECS’ Booth #1113 at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), the world’s largest modeling, simulation, and training event, from November 27 to December 1 in Orlando, Florida.

Engineering & Computer Simulations’ Product, Defense Logistics Agency/Defense Energy Support Center Capstone Exercise Simulation, Named Finalist in 2023 Serious Games Showcase & Challenge
October 17, 2023: Orlando, FL – Mick Golson, Engineering & Computer Simulations (ECS) President, is pleased to announce that an ECS training product has been selected as a finalist in the Serious Games Showcase & Challenge (SGS&C). Defense Logistics Agency-Energy (DLA-E)/Defense Energy Support Center (DESC) Capstone Exercise Simulation is one of the six finalists in the Government Audience Games category. Developed for the DLA-E, DESC Capstone Exercise Simulation is a turn-based strategy resource management game for Joint Petroleum Officers (JPO) to train and measure mission performance while performing petroleum logistics during unpredictable challenges.
Within the DESC Capstone Exercise Simulation, JPOs efficiently administer resources during a humanitarian crisis using real-world operations to ensure bases remain fueled and operational. Users deal with unpredictable challenges, such as weather delays and civil unrest, as they execute their plans. These randomized events allow JPOs to deal with different events each time and train regularly since no play-through training options are identical.
Golson says: “ECS is proud to deliver DESC Capstone Exercise Simulation to the DLA-E to support our military’s needs with engaging game-based training and to enhance training quality and retention. This tool works in conjunction with the instructional distance learning and on-site training we are also providing the DLA-E.”
SGS&C is known as the foremost setting for recognition of excellence in the field of Serious Games development. The finalists are evaluated by an esteemed panel of judges and attendees also vote for the People’s Choice winner during Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), held in Orlando, FL, from November 27 through December 1, 2023. The SGS&C winners will be announced at an Awards Ceremony at I/ITSEC on November 30.
